In 2003, when EdTech was still an unfamiliar concept in Vietnam, I had the honor of sharing a bold vision on the front page of eChip Magazine:
A dream that one day, the humble PC could become a “teaching assistant”—helping educators better understand and support their students.
At the time, it was a dream of the future.
Today, that future is deployed.
After years of research and development, I’m proud to share that this “AI teaching assistant” is no longer just an idea on paper. It has been realized as a working AI module called ai_student_performance, developed and successfully deployed by my team in an International Baccalaureate (IB) school setting.
🔍 The Mission: What It Delivers
Our AI assistant doesn't just process data—it provides strategic foresight:
- Analyzes multidimensional data points: academic, behavioral, attendance
- Predicts students at risk of underperformance with 92% Recall, prioritizing early and accurate intervention
- Empowers educators and counselors with transparent, explainable insights using SHAP values
⚙️ From Lab to Live: The Technology Behind the Vision
This isn't a black box. It's a carefully architected solution:
- Model: Random Forest – chosen for its performance and interpretability
- Performance: Accuracy: 85% Recall: 92% Precision: 78%
- Deployment: Flask API integrated with a real-time dashboard, pulling data from systems like ManageBac and PowerSchool
🌱 My Unwavering Philosophy: Human-Centered AI
AI is not here to replace teachers. AI is here to restore their most valuable resource: time.
By automating data analysis, we empower educators to focus on what truly matters—human connection, mentorship, and personalized support.
🚀 The Road Ahead
The foundation is built. The next steps are clear:
- Full integration for automated alerts
- Empowering staff through targeted training
- Continuous model retraining
- Ongoing ethical discussions around data privacy, fairness, and bias prevention
The dream from 2003 now has a real-world answer. And this is just the beginning.
